Rich's Priorities  River Recreation

River Recreation

I have lived next to the Platte River for most of my life.  Being raised, and working on the river as a fishing and hunting guide and outfitter, the one question I have consistently heard from constituents is, "How can we get onto the rivers?”  I have always believed that the Platte and Elkhorn rivers in this NRD are two of Nebraska's greatest natural resources, so I thought what we needed was a plan to develop a safe way for boaters, tubers, fishermen, and families, to gain easy access to use these wonderful resources.

At my initiative, as your NRD Director, I requested that the NRD staff develop a feasible plan to build a number of river access areas close to area roadways.  With support for the river access concept from area constituents, and several other NRD Directors, a comprehensive plan was presented to the full NRD Board of Directors and approved.  So far we have built four river access sites, including 1) Platte River Landing next to the Highway 64 bridge on the Platte River, 2) Elkhorn Crossing Recreation Area, just east of 264th and Bennington Road, 3) West Maple Elkhorn River Access, just east of the village of Waterloo on Highway 64, and the newest river access, 4) Graske Crossing, located on the Elkhorn River next to the West Dodge Street Expressway at the Skyline Drive exit.

Long range plans call for one more Elkhorn River access point downstream of Dodge Street, and I am very hopeful that another can be built on the lower Platte River, in the area of Highway 73/75, in southeastern Sarpy County.

If you have not visited or used one of these river access points, I would invite you to do so soon!  I hope you enjoy them and the river.  If you see me there, please be sure to say "Hi"!
